The Best 5 Heurigen in Vienna in Spring & Summer
Remember our blog post about our top 5 Heurigen in Vienna from some time ago? While we still stand behind our choices, we wanted to expand a little with an update on beautiful Viennese Heurigen which are perfect for visiting when the weather is warm and the sun is shining.
Generally speaking, our Heuriger (or Buschenschank, as they are also sometimes referred to) can be found on the outskirts of town as they are often either within or quite close to their vineyards. This makes it a little trickier to get to them but don’t worry: the excellent public transport system in Vienna combined with a short trip on foot will definitely get you there. Most of these places have plenty of space outdoors and will do their best to accommodate you upon arrival, but if you want to make sure you get a seat go ahead and book a table where you can (not all of them take reservations).
As always, it’s important to note that our Heurigen are not open every day or even every week, so it’s vital to check on the website (DO NOT trust Google on this) before you stand thirsty, hungry and in front of closed doors. The horror! Another thing: Make sure to have a little cash on hand. Not all of our Heurigen accept cards, and trust us: You will want to buy a few bottles before you head home again!
Wieninger am Nussberg, 1190 Vienna
One of Vienna’s best wineries operates a beautiful tavern on the Nussberg hill right next to their vineyards featuring their award-winning wines, great food & a stunning view of Vienna. This is where the locals love to go, not just because of its superb location but also because it perfectly mixes old and new, tradition and innovation.
Mayer am Nussberg, 1190 Vienna
Located not too far from Wieninger am Nussberg, this is the summer outpost of one of Vienna’s most popular Heurigen (Mayer am Pfarrplatz). Set up in the middle of the vineyard with lawn chairs, a sandbox for kids and plenty of space to run around, this Heurigen shows you exactly what Viennese “Gemütlichkeit” (a special form of coziness that cannot be translated - think Hygge, but with wine!) is all about. Amazing wines and delicious food to top it all off - we’re sold.
Heuriger Fuchs-Steinklammer, 1230 Vienna
Dating back to 1697, at this Heurigen they know what they’re doing: namely, producing high quality wines by combining the knowledge of many generations with today’s modern technology. We love their beautiful, lush & serene outdoor area and love to spend our Sunday afternoons there.
Weinhof Zimmermann, Neustift am Walde, 1190 Vienna
Situated on a steep little hillside, Weinhof Zimmermann not only has a unique vibe: It also comes with a small petting zoo, a children’s playground as well as (in addition to their wines) their own little schnapps distillery.
Weinstube Josefstadt, 1080 Vienna
If you are pressed for time and cannot make it to one of Vienna’s beautiful Heurigen, this is for you: The cozy Weinstube is located in the 8th district not too far from the city center and comes with a beautiful outdoor seating area. Find out why Vienna is often called one of the greenest cities by stumpling upon this hidden green oasis featuring true Heurigen flair - with a glass of crisp Grüner Veltliner in hand, of course.
